eTool Finland - health game Fume

In the second part of our series we want to introduce the game Fume - a digital health education game, which deals with nicotine products and the health hazards of using them. It is used by the professionals of Seinäjoki Social and Primary Health Care Center in Finland to support the tobacco-related health education.

Fume is a mobile game aimed at supporting tobacco-free life. It offers information about tobacco products and increases the understanding about the consequences of tobacco product use in a new and fun way.

Fume can be played independently or used in tobacco-related health education and promotion for example at schools. Fume is targeted primarily at 10-13-year-old children.

The game includes fact sheets and five different minigames where the player gets to examine the consequences of tobacco and snus (smokeless tobacco product) use for example on health, physical health and environment. The minigames also cover peer pressure and the costs of using tobacco products.

Fume has been developed together with adolescents, the TEPE research group (University of Turku) and NordicEdu game company. Fume is a part of the NO! To smoking –project and a postgraduate research completed at the department of Nursing Science at the University of Turku. University of Turku owns the Fume game

It has been tested in a doctoral thesis by H. Parisod (2018):
